SHRI HEMKUND SAHIB TOUR

Hemkund Sahib (also spelled Hemkunt), known as Gurudwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib Ji, is a Sikh place of worship and pilgrimage site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. It is devoted to Guru Gobind Singh Ji (1666–1708), the tenth Sikh Guru, and finds mention in Dasam Granth, a work believed to be dictated by Guruji himself. With its setting of a glacial lake surrounded by seven mountain peaks, each adorned by a Nishan Sahib on its cliff, it is according to the Survey of India located in the Himalayas at an elevation of 4,632 meters (15,197 feet). It is approached from Gobindghat on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. The main town near Gobindghat is Joshimath.

Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib:

The Gurudwara of Hemkund Sahib is located on the banks of Lake Hemkund, where the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, that is Guru Gobind Singh, meditated. It was the same Guru that started the new brotherhood called Khalsa.

Like most gurudwaras, there is a sarovar (pond) for bathing or taking the holy bath before going inside, as it is customary for Sikhs. Fed by springs and waterfalls, the water of the lake is extremely cold and there are separate shelters for men and women to take a holy dip. There are few small shops to buy souvenirs here.

Hemkund Lake:

Hemkund Lake is situated near the Hemkund Gurudwara. It remains frozen during most of the year, approximately eight months. Surrounded by snow laden mountains on all the sides, this lake is considered to be a place of religious importance for Sikhs as well as Hindus.

As per legend, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, that is Guru Gobind Singh meditated on the banks of the river. Hemkund Lake has its association with some popular religious teachers like Rishi Medhasa, who is believed to have meditated on the banks of this lake.

Lakshman Temple:

The Lakshman Temple is located on the bank of the Hemkund Lake and the temple is also known by the name of Lokpal Temple among Hindus. It is believed that Lakshman, the brother of Lord Ram meditated in this region after the battle with Ravan’s son Meghnad to regain his power.
