Located between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, the Badrinath temple in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is naturally blessed with untouched natural beauty and breathtaking surroundings. One of the holy places of the Chote Chardham Yatra, this temple is perfectly placed in front of the huge Neelkanth mountain peak. The temple name Badrinath is derived from Badri, which means the place where berries grow in abundance. With various holy legends and myths associated with it, Badrinath Dham holds prevalence in the sacred travel list of the Hindu pilgrims.

Travelling to this holy place is an ideal option for the pilgrims who want to rest in the middle of calm and peaceful surroundings. Apart from the main Badrinath temple, pilgrims on Badrinath Yatra can even travel to some other interesting places located nearby Badrinath in order to have a mesmerizing experience.

Badrinath Temple:

Badrinath Temple, which is one of the famous temples in Badrinath, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is situated on the left bank of River Alaknanda, 3,133 m above the sea level. The temple has a small cupola of gilt bull and spire and is constructed in the form of a cone. The Badrinath Temple was built by saint philosopher Adi Guru Shankaracharya in 8th century. The temple is famous for its Badrinath idol sculpted in black stone, which is one metre high and depicts Lord Vishnu seated in meditative pose. Apart from this, the temple has 15 idols of various Hindu gods.

Tapt Kund:

Tapt Kund is the abode of Lord Agni and is famous for its medicinal properties. Before entering the Badrinath Temple, one has to take a holy dip in the Tapt Kund. The dip into the hot water of this kund is believed to be spiritually rejuvenating and relieves the sins. The temperature of the water of Kund is 45° Celsius and there are number of hot water springs on the banks of Alaknanda River.

Brahma Kapal:

Brahma Kapal is a ghat situated on the banks of Alaknanda River and is situated in the vicinity of Badrinath temple. It is a flat platform where Hindus perform several rituals and pay homage to the departed souls and also proffer sraddha to their ancestors. It is believed that Lord Brahma resides in Brahma Kapal Ghat. It is also believed that the head of Brahma had fallen off at this place. Travellers visiting Brahma Kapal can also visit Mata Murthy Temple, Sheshnetra Temple and Charanpaduka Temple which are situated nearby.


Neelkanth, which is also known as the 'Garhwal Queen', is named after Lord Shiva. It is a snowy peak in the shape of a pyramid that forms the background of the Badrinath. The peak is situated at an average elevation of around 6,597 m above sea level.

Mata Murti Temple:

Mata Murti Temple is situated at a distance of 3 km from Badrinath on the banks of River Alaknanda. This temple is dedicated to Mata Murti, the mother of two sons Narayana and Nara. There is a popular belief that the goddess has power of granting Vairagya to those who meditate sincerely in her presence. The temple is visited for worshipping Mata Murti on Ashtami, Shukla Tritiya and Chaturdashi. Moreover, during the time of Mata Murti Ka Mela, the mother of Shri Badrinath is worshipped.


Satopanth is a triangular lake with three corners spread within the circumference of about a kilometre. The Satopanth Lake is situated 4,402 m above the sea level and is 25 km from Badrinath. The lake is surrounded by snow covered peaks and is named after the Hindu gods Mahesh, Vishnu and Brahma. It is believed that these gods occupy one corner each of the Satopanth Lake.

Surya Kund:

Surya Kund is situated beside Tapt Kund. A holy dip is taken in the hot water springs of this kund. Narada Kund which is situated close to the Surya Kund is also visited, as it is the place where the idol of Vishnu was discovered.
